this coming Saturday night with a creative touring group from Porltand, yourdrugsmymoney.
We will be doing a collaborative set at the end of the night and there is talk of putting this out on yourdrugsmymoneys' record label if it comes out well.

Because I've been so into Power Noize, Noise and Industrial/EBMish stuff lately, my performance will reflect a lot of that
sensibility.

I'm so excited, I just purchase a Feedback eliminator which will allow me to use very heavy distortion with vocals and found objects
without having all the uncontrollable feedback problems that occur with live microphones.

I'll also be projecting my new lo fi, toy digital video animations that I"ve been making at the show.
Come on out to an unusual creative show in the South Bay if you don't have anything to do.
So of course I bring this up because I am a male vocalist, and because I tend to sing, and not rap I have had a hard time finding electronic collaboration. My voice tends to be soulful, and more toward a male version of elizabeth frasier, with a bit of eastern influence (north indian classical, balkan, and middle eastern), as well as non-verbal and experimantal(meredith monk).
Are those of you who make electronic music more drawn to the female voice? I am just curious.

It uses the traditional 'voice through chords' vocoder technique with one crucial difference. All the notes in the chords are independent lines which bend in different directions to make the chord changes. It's very trippy!
in the new year?

I just got a really great distortion pedal and want to learn how to tame it's output so I can use it with my voice.

I heard of a noise artist who runs his voice through 9 different distortion pedals, so that the end result sounds nothing like voice but still what you sing heavily effects the noise output.
I haven't even heard what he did but it was really inspiring to her about it.

I also am going to try and woodshed some new Indian ragas and exotic world scales vocally this year. I was inspired by a live looping duet I did with Bansuri Flute master, Deepak Ram last year. I just asked him to give me five or six of his favorite Ragas and three or four key signatures to learn them in to prepare for our improv.

Oh, and I really want to mount another Voice and Electronics Festival down here in Santa Cruz and possibly in San Jose at the San Jose Museum of Art.

I'm hoping that Matt Davignon will feel like repeating the Two Day Bay Area Voice and Electroinics Thingee again as well.

That's where I got to hear the incomparable Dina Emerson for the first time. I'm a big fan of her artistry now.
I'm not really sure why Rick ever invited me to join this group. I am not a "vocalist" per se and never have been. I'm one of the many non-singing guitar mangelrs out there -- mostly cuz I can't sing and play at the same time. The only place I sing is in church (really)!

But I am re-thinking this since I a;so happen to be a "looper" -- especially after witnessing the many vocal possibies at Y2K4. My first question for y'all is: In terms for "bang for your buck" what is a good device to start with in radically modifying vocals? I have a iBook too, so that question could also be answered in terms of a software solution.

I know Rick uses a Digitech "Vocalist" type of pedal and has software like "Kantos" and stuff. What does this group have to say?

None of this would have been possible without the existence of Loopers Delight, founded and maintained by Kim Flint. He just told us that this incredibly informative and exciting website has over 900,000 page views per month now. Thanks Kim for all of your energy, time and financial contribution to this community.

See you all there, I hope!!!!

yours, Rick Walker (festival organizer)

ps Sadly, Concert headliner, Italy's Roberto Zorzi's has had to cancel his tour to the US because of the illness of his partner Paola. Our heart is with them both and we pray for her speedy recovery.

I got two rad new toy 'megaphone' styled effects processors this week at a local family owned toy store.

My favorite is the MAX SOUND Echo Machine ($13- part # 691)
which has a cheesy fix rate and length repeat echo on it.

What's cool is that it amplifies your voice initially and then adds the echo so I was able to do some rad things by beatboxing
using the tempo of the echo.

Also, it is really easy to overdrive the sound which gives this delicious lo-fi distortion sound with high falsetto sounds
(and I can also get it to do controlled feedback at a couple of pitches).

I liked it so much that I bought two of them................

Oh yeah, and the echo will turn off on a dime when you let go of the 'trigger'. I was getting some cool surreal stereo effects by suddenly cutting the trigger on one while continuing to sing through the other.

I tell ya, I'm in love, L- U- V

The other one is just your standard robot voice/techno/cheesy pitch shifter (VOICE CHANGER, # 661) (all the units that do this use the same chip, no matter what the manufacturer)............this one seems particularly lowfi, though and creates some really nice faux industrial (but still waaaaaay lo - fi) effects when I put it through the echo machine.

What also cracks me up is that there is a big yellow sticker on the device that says, "APPROVED DECIBEL LEVEL" on it
(which I could have that stickered on some harley davidson motorcyles that run through our neighborhood).

I can't find a website for this company, but here's the address

SRM Entertainment, LTD.
'vibe' going.

I really loved the evening and every single artist stimulated me and gave me ideas for how to do such a thing better the next time.

I also wanted to stimulate a discussion and have people describe (only if they have the time and inclination) what their approach was last night, both techically and aesthetically.

It would be fascinatig to hear what turned the singers on about the processing (and each other's performances) and what critiques they have of the process as well.

The same thing goes for the processors.........What turned you on? What would you do differently with more time to prepare?
I also wanted to profusely thank Matt for all the hard work and truly selfless energy that he put into this two night show.
I was sick on Friday and missed the Thursday night show in San Francisco but if Matt is into it, maybe we can invite the folks who contributed to that one here as well.

People like Matt are rare in my book. Any community who has someone who tirelessly tries to connect artists and promote creativity (especially when it is outside of the box) is a blessing.

thanks, buddy.
